It’s sort of Lollapalooza on steroids, or Burning Man but less dusty, or even Bumbershoot without all the rain. I’m currently bidding on camping tickets for all of us, which will probably be a lot better than trying to negotiate the clusterfuck in and out both days. Granted, it’s still going to be a clusterfuck with all those bands, but hopefully a slightly more managable one. Plus, if we camp we actually get to bring in food and water, instead of paying $8 for a bottle of water or whatever it was that caused the Woodstock riot a few years back.

It’s a lot of bands, and there’s quite a few that I would like to see, but it sounds like it’s going to be a really, REALLY big crowd, which always makes me a little nervous. I wish there was going to be WiFi there, but there ain’t… so all my pictures will have to wait until I get home to get uploaded.

Update: Well, I didn’t win the auction for the tickets, but only because some fucking asshole bid me out of them, thinking they were tickets to the event! Um, $100 to get 4 tickets that cost $175 each? “If it seems to good to be true…” Fucker. Now the original seller is trying to sell them to me for a Buy It Now of $100. No way, not when individual camping passes are going for less than $20 each.

This is what happens when you go with friends to the asian food store to buy a bunch of disgusting stuff. I am going to admit up front that I wussed out of pretty much everything (that’s my grape snapple sitting in front of me) and didn’t partake in the gross drinks with the chunks in it, the stale marshmallows with some sort of green tea in them, or the purple candle-looking layer cake thing. I did, however, try the red bag of chips in front of me, and they’re flavored with anchovies! Ewwww! I think Eric’s face pretty much says it all.

Finally, the next field trip to Vegas is planned! There’s some sort of competition going on at Heuco in a few weekends, so a bad time to just go normally, so the roomies, Kim, Eric and I are headed to sin city.

You might have to know him to appreciate it, but I was just telling him the other day that he’s one of the funniest/quirkiest guys I know. Example: David just moved into a house recently, and has a workshop basement where he can putter around and make furniture and stuff. So what does Jason bring him as a gift the other night? A “muscle car” calendar from 1994, complete with big-hair chicks and awful scenery. I asked him if he specifically bought that, or if he had it lying around. He had just picked it up in NY state, and was waiting for the opportunity to use it.

He also put a “2 drinks and I’m gay” magnetic bumper sticker on my car a few weeks ago. I’m still biding my time as to passing it on.

Also, he was the architect of the cowboy party, as well as the awesome photoshops after.

Go read it I’m looking forward to getting more updates from him.

Lots of emails flying around today about which day of the week would be best (so far Monday and Wednesday are the main candidates), as well as some side discussions about what the format should be. On one hand, there’s something to be said for a low threshold limit raise game. More people will play in each pot, since a quarter or $.50 to see a flop is no big deal. You’ll also lose money more slowly, so it would be hard to whittle away more than $20 over the course of 3 hours or so.

On the other hand, nothing compares to the strategy and gut-wrenching feeling of playing no-limit hold’em. You can’t really bully the short stack with a $.50 call, but if you push $20 into the pot unless he’s sitting on American Airlines he’ll probably back out pretty quick. The flip side of that is everyone going all-in right away to try and double up, which makes for not a very fun night. So, coming out of the side discussion that Joshua and I were having, I have a few ideas for poker nights:

  • Two different games. Maybe we all get together around 8, and play $.50/$1 limit raise games for a few hours, until maybe 10. That way everyone’s had their fill, and gotten to play a bunch of hands for good or ill. Then at 10, anyone who’s got the stomach for no-limit can get dealt in on no-limit or pot-limit games. This could get ugly quickly, which leads me to my next option.
  • Tournament play. Everyone has a set buy-in, maybe $20, and then gets a supply of “fake money” chips... maybe totalling $1000 or something. Everyone just plays until they are eliminated, and then based on what place you come in, you take home a certain percentage. Depending on the amount of players we could probably just use this WSOP table. That’s how most tournaments are run anyway. The downside to this is that maybe 1/3 of the players are guaranteed to go home with nothing, whereas with the limit raise games I’ve played so far, even if you’re doing poorly you tend to have at least $5 left at the end of 2-3 hours.
  • Saw an interesting article about spread limit games, which gives you some flexibility on your bets each round, but still capping the totals to the pots don’t get too out of hand. That way you can make calling a little more uncomfortable for people if you either a) have a good hand, or b) are trying to buy the pot.

    In any case, I don’t know if it can all get organized this week, but I’m guessing by next week we’ll have our first game, and I’m pretty excited about it. Should be lots of fun.

Some people really pulled off the cowboy thing well, especially David (who made his own hat and belt buckle out of card stock and aluminum foil) and Will (whose family has a ranch in Texas, natch).

    I, on the other hand, looked like some sort of psychedelic 70s cowboy acid nightmare. I didn’t have an actual cowboy shirt, so I went with this paisley polyester thing I had, which when combined with my hot new spinner belt buckle and borrowed hat made me look like a demented rodeo clown. However, I did do well in the spitting competition and was able to get a cherry pit into a spitoon from about 10 feet away. Several times, in fact.

Let’s run through it:

    • Today the weather was good enough (and I felt well enough) to ride in, and it was gorgeous. I made the 15 miles in just about an hour and 15 minutes, and it didn’t feel hard at all. Last time I nearly collapsed when I got here, so this time I took it a little bit easier, worked on breathing, and had a wonderful trip in.
    • One of my babies from the last job has launched. I’m pretty proud of this site; lots of fighting with creative to simplify the layout, and there’s lots of neat .nizzle stuff going on with the product pages. (BTW, this is the client who’s ramp I was prepared to “Jackass” on, and also the one that I was having all the “Poo” fun with)
    • You would probably have to know Brian to find this as funny as I do, but suffice to say that he likes to give himself challenges, whether it’s biking, climbing or computers. Here’s what I think he’ll probably do the next time he has to install a new distro:
      1. Write the new Linux 3.0 kernel himself at home. Using vi.

        Friday night I helped a friend of mine move into a nice place on the South Side. 3 flights of steps down to move out, and 3 flights of steps up to move in. Ugh. After moving there was a housewarming dealie at Dave and Casey’s new apartment (I swear, my moving karma is so high it’s not even funny).

        Saturday was sort of a bum-around day for the first half, then dinner at Pino’s with Dave and Casey again, and then off to do some serious drinkin’ at Dawn’s place with Ryan.

        Sunday morning. Ow. Ow. Owowow. Back to sleep. After lunch and some serious amounts of water, I decided to go for a ride to sweat out all the red wine in my system. 20 miles later, and I felt a lot better. Helped Ryan pack up his car and clean up his apartment, and then went to dinner at Regina Margherita with Paul/April and Brian/Jen, who is just about ready to pop.

        I also had a little time last night after dinner to bring back a few entries from my log that had gotten me in a small bit o’ trouble with my former employer. I’m no longer working for said employer, so now they’re back.

The food was actually quite good, and very reasonably priced, but by far the highlight of the evening was watching JR eat two very large blobs of wasabi, straight up.

        people still came over last night, and it actually wound up being bigger than i had initially thought… jen, casey, mara and the slf were all there; it went from a sausage party to a low-grade wingding! slf completely bailed me out by going and doing food/wine shopping during the day so we’d have enough snacky-treats… she went overboard, but in a very good way. the best part was that they brought me a little suprise birthday party cake! with b00bies! see for yourself:

        “they probably could smell your straight-ness a mile away”, i theorized.

        ]]>         http://feralboy.com/2002/08/01/im-on-the-bus-heading/feed/ 0         the sperminator http://feralboy.com/2002/07/11/the-sperminator/ http://feralboy.com/2002/07/11/the-sperminator/#comments Thu, 11 Jul 2002 19:56:30 +0000 mattcomroe http://feralboy.com/?p=749 my best friend is going to be the father of a lesbian couple’s child in about a month. he has the baby shower to go to this weekend, so we stopped by a store to pick up a gift for the shower. let me tell you; baby things have come a long way. first of all, john lennon seems to be this unstoppable force in baby goods; sort of the martha stewart of the infant set. nice that he can keep entertaining america’s youth, even after being dead for all these years. also, the technology is amazing. everything seems to vibrate, rock, play music, or otherwise relieve you of the burden of parenthood. there was one cradle/bassinet thing that caught my eye; it had a record and playback feature so you could record your own voice (presumably saying something soothing like “don’t worry… mommy is right here in the room, not downstairs having sex with the mailman”), which would play back intermingled with strains of lennon’s “imagine”.

        ryan and i had a good time putting our own messages on it and playing them back.
        “you don’t know who your daddy is.”
        “you have two mommies”
        “you were conceived with porn”
        etc.
